Statement of the Communist Party of Indiana CPUSA on the COVID-19 Pandemic

“One day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear” — President Trump, February 27, 2020, CNN

Indianapolis, IN — March 29, 2020 — The Communist Party of Indiana CPUSA (CPIN) sends heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who passed away from COVID-19, and our deep gratitude to the health care providers working under nearly impossible conditions to help keep those acutely suffering from the virus alive.

CPIN stands in solidarity with workers across Indiana and world-wide as together they navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.

On March 29 the IndyStar reported 1,514 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 32 deaths in Indiana. Marion County, with a large African American, Latino, and immigrant population, has 676 confirmed cases, 44% of the state total.

A focus on the lives of underserved and oppressed communities, incarcerated people and prison staff, migrants, African Americans, homeless, Native American, LGBTQ+, women, the elderly, disabled or those with physical/mental special needs, and all workers is needed to ensure these populations are not over-represented among the lists of the acutely ill and the mourned dead.

CPIN supports all efforts to secure the safety of the front line healthcare workers in the struggle against the COVID-19 pandemic: nurses, EMT, doctors, administrative and all working selflessly to protect lives and care for the ill.

Postal, delivery, grocery store, and those involved in making and delivering food, and most of all the food pantry workers, are in high risk situations working for the well being of everyone as the USA navigates through this period. Police and fire department workers also. All the work these people do is vital to meeting the COVID-19 challenge, and much appreciated.

We demand that the federal government procure and provide adequate tests, masks, and ventilators quickly to all front line and support workers who need them.

The enactment of a $2.2 trillion bail out which provides another tax break for the 1% and handouts to industries, sweetened with a little money for workers, proves that there is a bottomless pocketbook for bailouts for corporations. The airline, energy, and healthcare product industries should be nationalized instead of being bailed out

The trillion dollar bailout makes a mockery of the question often asked supporters of Medicare for All — who will pay for the the program? Clearly money is available where there is political will, and what is a higher priority than the health of the US population for the US government? Profits? CPIN rejects putting profits before people.

CPIN demands the immediate passage of Medicare for All as the only reform that can move us as a society to a humane position where healthcare is a human right rather than a privilege of the wealthy.

CPIN further demands an ongoing, living wage income for all under- and unemployed workers without preconditions or restrictions, no questions asked, along with quality housing, no evictions or penalties for late rent payments, for all.

Widespread testing must occur now to develop a scientific understanding of the spread of the pandemic across Indiana and the USA to inform the allocation of resources and development of data based policies to address the pandemic, and to protect working people’s lives.

In this time of social distancing and fear of contact with others, please make an effort to use social media, phones, Netflix Party, Zoom, and other technologies to avoid isolation and for mutual support. Don’t forget those who don’t have access to these technologies, especially now when libraries offering computer access are closed. Write cards, letters, or short notes to remind people they are not alone.

CPIN mourns the passing of our neighbors and friends in Indiana and elsewhere, and sends best wishes for rapid recovery to those currently ill.

The Communist Party of Indiana CPUSA fights for working class power in Indiana to meet the needs of all workers and their communities, and for socialism. Please consider joining us in this struggle at cpusa.org.

The people united will never be defeated! ¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!

In unity and struggle,

Eric Brooks (rico49@gmail.com), Chair, Communist Party of Indiana CPUSA
